Facial recognition is a technology that is increasingly used in both the public and private sectors. The idea is simple: to make us all identifiable in real-time by machines. The purposes are endless: social control, predictive policing, background checks, access to public services – right up to disturbing scenarios of the emotional and psychological state assessment. But what impact does all this have on public space and our cities? We will talk about how facial recognition risks weakening our democracies and compressing our fundamental rights, with a particular focus on the Italian situation, together with the Italian promoters of the #ReclaimYourFace campaign.
