The CNIL – Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés has issued two significant fines (100 million and 35 million) to two bigtech corps.
The first corporation is being challenged for:
- the installation of non-essential cookies without the user’s prior consent;
- the lack of information in the banner and the difficulty of finding it even by clicking on the read more button;
- even if consent is denied, some advertising cookies remain active.
The second corporation is being challenged for: - the installation of non-essential cookies without the user’s prior consent;
- an overly generic banner without sufficient information on the use of cookies and their effects on users.
Despite some improvements introduced on both sites, a number of violations still persist, which if not resolved will lead to an additional fine of €100,000 per day.
